I've been saying, for years now, that we’ll never get Climate Justice without Social Justice.
In 2019, my son went to sit on a bridge with a group called Extinction Rebellion (XR). And I thought: Great! It’s pitchforks, and Kett’s Rebellion! Then I did Non-violent direct action training, and it completely hit the mark for me.
So, in 2019, a group of kids from the Tinkers bubble started a samba band. We went to the first rebellion. We used tactics to direct the police. We were very successful at causing trouble, and protecting XR from trouble. The police, somehow, didn’t want to touch us.
At the point when the band wanted to go in a more XR direction, I left and started to do more arrestable actions. It was one of the best times in my life, in fact, sitting in the road. Because I’m from The Road, and the police don’t intimidate me at all. I also enjoyed the court, and the legal side of it. I found that very interesting, because it’s all smoke and mirrors; when you ping it, it all disappears.
